Apostille attestation meaning: An Apostille is an attestation done for personal, Commercial and Educational documents like birth/death/marriage certificates, Affidavits, Power of Attorney, High School and senior secondary School certificates, various Diploma, Degrees and many more accepted and honored by 105 Hague Convention members and signatory nations, this helps the member countries to abolished the requirement of the legalization of foreign public documents.

Apostilled documents are accepted in 105 Hague Convention members and signatory nations, an apostille is a process in which any public or private document Apostilled by one Hague Convention member country is acceptable in all the other 104 Hague Convention member-countries. This process helps in abolishing the policy to get all the required documents attested in each or for each of the Hague Convention member-countries separately.

What is the Apostille Attestation procedure in India?

Procedure for Apostille Attestation: Any person who is planning to go abroad is required to get their personal, professional, educational or commercial documents apostilled.

Applicants are required to visit e-Sanad website – E-Sanad is the online service for verification and attestation of personal, professional, educational or commercial documents of Indian citizens introduced by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. Applicants are then required to upload their personal, professional, educational or commercial documents and pay the standard fee set by the e-service provider. Personal, professional, educational or commercial documents are then digitally verified by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) and General Administration Department (GAD), Government of India (GOI). MEA (Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India) then verify the digitally signed /pre-approved documents. Lastly attested documents with Apostille stickers are dispatched to the applicant.

Kindly note: As the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Government of India is not accepting personal, professional, educational or documents directly from the applicant/individual, all personal, professional, educational or documents for the purpose of Attestation/ Apostille by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Government of India are to be submitted and collected from authorised agencies.

Documents that cannot be attested under e-Sanad

Authentication of Documents: Applicants have to get their documents authenticated from the State Regional Authentication Centre. The personal Papers/documents can be attested by the Home / General Administration Department of respective State / Union Territory. The educational degrees/certificates can be attested by the education department of the issuing state / union territory. The attestation of the commercial documents can be done by the Chamber of Commerce of the respective state, registered with the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

Submission of Documents with MEA Authorized Attestation Centre

Applicants have to visit the MEA authorized attestation agency that is near to his / her place of residence. Authenticated documents needs to be submitted with MEA authorized agency to the Branch having territorial jurisdiction.

What is the Apostille Attestation Fee in India?

The Ministry of External Affairs, (MEA) Government of India levied a fee of Rs. 50 for Apostille of each personal, professional, educational document. However, as the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Government of India is not accepting documents directly from the applicant/individual, all personal, professional, educational documents for the purpose of Apostille by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Government of India are to be submitted and collected from the authorised agencies. Personal, professional, educational documents can be authenticated/apostilled using e-Sanad services in India. The personal, professional, educational documents document should be available in the digital repository for getting attestation/apostille via the online e-Sanad services in India. In case your document is not in the digital repository and cannot be recognized by e-Sanad website, It is mandatory for the applicant to visit the Regional Authentication Centres (RACs) to upload their Personal, professional, educational documents and then submit it to the nearest centre for getting the documents verified and Apostilled.
